BSA Certificate in Industrial Audiometry
 
Suitable for: those employed to carry out hearing tests on industrial employees.

Audiometry is often carried out on industrial workers and those exposed to noise. This
3 day course is intended to train audiometricians or occupational health workers who
do not hold a formal qualification in audiometry. The course includes: basic acoustics,
aetiology of hearing loss, pathology of noise induced hearing loss and tinnitus, surveillance audiometry in the field, calibration requirements, noise induced hearing loss and social handicap, personal protective equipment, report writing. Practical training will include air conduction audiometry (manual and automatic) and otoscopy. Delegates will be expected to undertake a practical assessment in audiometry and a homework written exam before gaining the certificate.

BSA Certificate in Basic Audiometry and Tympanometry

Suitable for GPs, School Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Teachers of the Deaf, Educational Audiologists

This course is designed for professionals in healthcare and education, who are not qualified audiologists, but who wish to carry out tympanometry and pure tone audiometry as part of their service. This course includes: anatomy and physiology, otoscopy interpretation, air and bone conduction audiometry (theory and interpretation), tympanometry (theory and interpretation), physics of sound, air conduction audiometry (practical), otoscopy (practical), tympanometry (practical).

Delegates who complete the training must pass a practical assessment in otoscopy, air conduction audiometry and tympanometry in order to gain their certificate.

 

BSA Certificate in Otoscopy and Impression Taking (Children over 5 years)

Suitable for:  Teachers of the Deaf, Educational Audiologists, Registered Hearing Aid Dispensers.

Training for otoscopy and impression taking (to British Society of Audiology standards). The day includes basic anatomy and physiology, what to look for on otoscopy and practical skills in otoscopy and impression taking to BSA standards. Delegates who complete the training will be required to pass a practical and written assessment before they obtain the certificate of practice. The practical assessment is undertaken on the day, and the written assessment is taken away as homework to be completed within 4 weeks of the course. The course is 8-9 hours over one day including the practical assessment.

Successful completion of this BSA Certificate qualifies practitioners to apply these skills to adults and children (aged 5 or above). A separate qualification: BSA Certificate in Otoscopy and Impression Taking (Paediatric) is necessary to enable practitioners to apply these skills to babies and children under the age of 5. Those who wish to practice on under 5’s, and have less than 6 months prior experience, will need to undertake a second day of training (see below) to gain the paediatric certificate. Alternatively, those with 6 months experience or more, can undertake the paediatric impression-taking qualification as a stand-alone course.

 

BSA Certificate in Otoscopy and Impression Taking - Paediatric (Children under 5 years)

Suitable for:  Teachers of the Deaf, Educational Audiologists, Registered Hearing Aid Dispensers.

Training for otoscopy and impression taking in paediatrics (to British Society of Audiology standards). The day includes considerations for impression taking, specific to paediatric work, and practical sessions related to the methods used to take impressions safely in children under 5 years. Delegates who complete the training will undergo practical supervision in their own authority by a designated supervisor and a practical assessment before they obtain the certificate of practice.

Successful completion of this BSA Certificate qualifies practitioners to apply these skills to babies and children (aged below 5 years). Those who wish to practice on under 5’s, and have less than 6 months prior experience, will need to undertake the over 5 course first (see page 22). Those with more than 6 months experience in impression-taking, can undertake the paediatric impression-taking qualification as a stand-alone course.

BSA Certificate in Otoscopy and Impression Taking for Parents (Children over 5 years)

Suitable for: Parents of Deaf or Hearing Impaired Children over 5 years.

Training for otoscopy and impression taking (to British Society of Audiology standards). On completion of the certificate, parents will be qualified to take impressions on their own children (who are over 5), and at their own risk. This 2-day course includes basic anatomy and physiology, what to look for on otoscopy, ear mould requirements and practical skills in otoscopy and impression taking to BSA standards. Parents who complete the training will be required to pass a practical and written assessment before they obtain the certificate of practice. The practical assessment is undertaken as part of the course, and the written assessment is taken away as homework to be completed within 4 weeks of the course.

Successful completion of this BSA Certificate qualifies parents to apply these skills to their own children (aged 5 or above). A separate qualification: BSA Certificate in Otoscopy and Impression Taking (Paediatric) is necessary to enable parents to apply these skills to babies and children under the age of 5.

BSA Certificate in Impression Taking for Parents (Paediatric)

Suitable for: Parents of Deaf or Hearing Impaired Children under 5 years.

Training for otoscopy and impression taking (to British Society of Audiology standards). On completion of the certificate, parents will be qualified to take impressions on their own children (who are aged under 5 and above), and at their own risk. This 3-day course includes basic anatomy and physiology, what to look for on otoscopy, earmould requirements, practical skills in otoscopy and impression taking to BSA standards, and considerations for working with babies and toddlers. Parents who complete the training will be required to pass a practical and written assessment before they obtain the certificate of practice. The practical assessment is undertaken on the course, and the written assessment is taken away as homework to be completed within 4 weeks of the course.

Successful completion of this BSA Certificate qualifies parents to apply these skills to their own children (aged under 5 and above). Parents with children over 5 may wish to complete a shorter 2-day course for impression-taking in children over 5.

Earmoulds and Impression-Taking Refresher Course

One day refresher course in otoscopy and impression-taking to BSA standards, and earmould acoustics. This refresher course is suitable for any professional who is already trained in impression taking and who takes, or is due to take impressions routinely in their service.

Pure Tone Audiometry and Masking

2 Day Course £170

Suitable for: Teachers of the Deaf (particularly those still in training), Learning Support Assistants or any professional who needs to use this piece of equipment.

This is a 2 day course for professionals who are already competent in air and bone conduction audiometry and would like to practice the 3 rules of masking. The 2 days will include the BSA recommended procedure for masking, interpretation of audiometry nand audiograms, masking charts and plateaus and practical sessions on an audiometer and OTIS a virtual patient.

It is recommended that delegates who are new to masking and undertake this course, will be using masking routinely as part of their job role, and will have some period of supervised practice following the course to ensure skills are maintained.
