Students whose GCSE profile is slightly stronger (and where the timetable allows) may take one or more of these courses alongside an AS level subject.
During Year 1 the follwing courses are offered:
• Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Floristry – broadly equivalent to one GCSE at C or above
• Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Hospitality – broadly equivalent to 2 GCSE’s at C or above
• Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Travel and Tourism – broadly equivalent to 2 GCSE’s (or can be extended to the equivalent of 4 GCSEs) at grade C or above
After Year one students choose from the list of A Level or BTEC Level 3 subjects.
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
Students will normally take three Advanced Courses and a qualification in key skills. Many students who complete Advanced Courses in the Sixth Form go on to degree courses at university. Other continue with Further Education, vocational training or employment opportunities.
STUDY IN THE SIXTH FORM
Most of the work will be new, and much of it will be challenging. You will be stretched! We hope you will find that there is no greater satisfaction than mastering something you thought you would never be able to do. You will discover talents that you never knew you had, and achieve things that you thought were beyond you. When you do, you will find staff who will share your excitement and enthusiasm, for they too expect great things of you.
You will also need to learn to study in new ways. You will not be spoon-fed, and you will need to study independently. Your tutors will help you to develop the skills necessary to do this through a “learning to learn” programme. We expect you to study after school but we also encourage you to take part in evening events and activities. It is important that you relax and enjoy the company of your friends when you have finished your work. We believe that you need to study for around three hours outside the school day, either in your bedroom or in the computer rooms, which are open until 9pm Monday to Thursday.
By the time you finish your Sixth Form course with us you should be quite capable of studying at a higher level in university or college.

CORE SUBJECTS
The following are compulsory core subjects which will be studied by ALL Sixth Formers alongside their chosen academic programme.
• PSHE, which includes Planning for the Future
We believe in the importance of educating the whole person and we have a structured PSHE programme during which Sixth Formers are encouraged to think about issues ranging from moral concerns to the management of personal finances. Visiting speakers are also invited on a regular basis. These have included magistrates, employers, former pupils, health professionals and universities. In conjunction with another local school, all Year 12 students participate in a two day “Champions of Enterprise” event, and in addition there are opportunities for students to take part in public
speaking competitions.
• ICT Key Skill Level 2 (if not gained previously)
• Physical Education
