This course is for teachers, lecturers and classroom support staff working with post-16 deaf students in schools and colleges. It will take a practical approach to overcoming literacy issues found in deaf students taking entry leve and higher literacy courses. It will also be useful to professionals working in other subject areas who are finding challenges in delivering their curriculum to those deaf learners who have significant literacy delays. This course covers transitions across a range of ages, from early years to primary; primary to secondary and secondary to further or higher education. We will look together at aspects of transition such as audiology, social/emotional factors, curriculum, legislation and provision, using presentations, discussion groups, skills practice and resource packs. Early Year settings are increasingly caring for more deaf babies and children and their families whose hearing impairment was diagnosed early as part of the Newborn Hearing Screening process. This study day concentrates on the special needs of hearing impaired 0-2 year olds and uses a combination of presentations, small group discussion and "hands on" workshops to promote understanding and develop skills related to the special needs of these babies and children. |
