Literacy for Deaf Students and Adults

Suitable for: Teachers of the Deaf, mainstream teachers, College Lecturers, Teaching Assistants, Learning Support Assistants or any other interested professional.

This course is for teachers, lecturers and classroom support staff working with post-sixteen deaf students in schools and colleges. It will take a practical approach to overcoming literacy
issues found in deaf students taking entry level and higher literacy courses. It will also be useful to professionals working in other subject areas who are finding challenges in delivering their curriculum to those deaf learners who have significant literacy delays.

Sessions will include:
  • Classroom management,
  • Literacy issues and strategies
  • Use of ICT

The Analytical Writing Assessment: finding & addressing the missing pieces in deaf children’s literacy

Teachers of the Deaf have regularly commented that criteria used to measure writing progress in hearing children are  inadequate for deaf children, because they do not measure the level of skill at which many deaf children are working. The Analytical Writing Assessment is just what they have been waiting for.
 
The day includes background, research findings and “hands-on” use of assessment and programme materials.

Transitions for Deaf Children and Young People

Led by Viv Ogg, Joy Rosenberg and Dr Janette Willis

Suitable for: Teachers of the Deaf in all settings as well as mainstream teachers, SENCOs, Teaching Assistants and Speech & Language Therapists who have responsbility for children with hearing loss.

This course is focused on strategies for promoting and monitoring the development of higher order and independent thinking and learning skills in deaf children at KS2, 3 and 4.
 
It uses recent research, but also the national strategies, to explore the ways in which those supporting deaf children can incorporate such strategies into their lessons and interactions
with the children to secure their learning optimally, including the encouragement of the voice of the child and of children taking responsibility for their own learning.

Deaf Babies and Children in Early Years Settings

Suitable for: Sure Start and Children's Centre staff, Nursery Nurses and playgroup staff, childminders, carers and Primary School staff

Early Years settings are increasingly caring for more deaf babies, children and their families, whose hearing impairment was diagnosed early, as part of the Newborn Hearing Screening process.  This study day concentrates on the special needs of hearing-impaired 0-2 year olds and uses a combination of presentations, small group discussions and 'hands on' workshops to promote understanding and evelop skills related to the special needs of these babies and children.

This course covers transitions across a range of ages, from early years to primary; primary to secondary and secondary to further or higher education.  We will look together at aspects of transition such as audiology, social/emotional factors, curriculum, legislation and provision, using presentations, discussion groups, skills practice and resource packs.
