FLORISTRY: EDEXCEL BTEC LEVEL 2 Certificate

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is a one-year course for sixth-form students. It is broadly equivalent to one GCSE.

Students at Mary Hare can study for this one year vocational course whilst also attending classes to improve their English/Maths in preparation for resitting these two subjects for GCSE.

The course has no external examinations. Instead, students study a number of different units of work. This will include:

• The identification and use of flowers and foliage
• Maintain the condition of plants
• Plan, prepare and construct floral arrangements and tied floral designs
• Students will study Floristry for 4 periods a week and will have to carry out research and complete assignments outside of lessons.

The coursework is marked in school and then externally verified. The grades awarded for each unit are Pass, Merit or Distinction. Points are awarded for each grade and the final grade is determined by adding together the points for each unit of work completed. The course is taught by class lectures, discussions and role-plays, and uses text books, television and video and other material, including
newspapers, magazines and the internet. This is a vocational course that incorporates visits to relevant locations and offers the opportunity of a work placement within the floristry industry.
