GCE MEDIA STUDIES (A/S) - Advanced subsidiary in media communication and production (single award)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to promote an understanding of the media industry within a vocational academic context. The focus of study for this course will be the print industry. Students will have the opportunity to study in detail several aspects of the print industry, including the working practices of a local newspaper. Students will also produce a variety of print based products using industry standard software.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS

Four GCSEs at Grade C or above, one of which must be English. A high level of commitment to the subject is essential.

TEACHING/LEARNING STYLES

The teaching and learning styles will vary but will include industrial visits, discussion and investigating case studies.

INDEPENDENT STUDY

Students will be expected to spend between 5 - 8 hours a week outside of school hours on private study.

RESIDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS/OUT OF SCHOOL TRIPS

A number of visits will be made across the AS and the A2. These will include visits to both local and national media organisations. In addition, students will be expected to take part in organised trips to the Museum of the Moving Image and the Museum of Photography, Film and Television.

Successful candidates can progress to the A2 Media course.
