Four GCSEs at Grade C or above; a good grade in Science would be useful. The course involves a lot of reading and extended writing so good linguistic skills are required. A high level of commitment to the subject is essential.

TEACHING/LEARNING STYLES

The teaching is varied and includes discussion, investigative work, case studies, role play, visits to care settings and conferences, and talks from outside speakers.

INDEPENDENT STUDY

Students will be expected to spend between 5 - 8 hours a week outside of school hours on private study. This will include personal research and use of ICT.

RESIDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS/OUT OF SCHOOL TRIPS

As this course is vocationally based students will be expected to undertake work experience (arranged through West Berkshire EBP) in Years 12 and 13. Students will have short-term placements at Mary Hare Primary outside school hours in order to experience life in a care setting.

PROGRESSION ROUTES

This course serves as an entry qualification to Higher Education diploma or degree courses. It also serves as a good basis for a wide range of occupations in the field of health and social care,
e.g. community work, health services, housing services, social work and welfare work.
