Mary Hare's family
Mary Hare’s grandfather was Jabez Hare, born in Ipswich, Suffolk on 6th July 1796. Jabez was the son of Jonathan Hare and Elizabeth.
Jabez married Elizabeth Leman Matthews in Ipswich on 10 March 1818. Elizabeth was born in Ipswich about 1798.
Jabez and Elizabeth had 13 children born between 1819 and 1841 of these 5 died between the ages of 1 and 17. Only one, Thomas Matthews Hare married, the father of Mary Hare. Her mother is Adelaide Mary Rogers born York, Yorkshire about 1832.
Thomas and Adelaide had 10 children between 1857 and 1874. This includes two sets of twins. Only three of these, Ada Catherine, Thomas Leman Matthews and George Montague, married. George married one of Mary Hare’s pupils, Ethel Knaggs. Only Ada had children.
Of the children:
Sophie Louise Hare was Principle of schools first in Croydon then Walthamstow Hall School, Sevenoaks, Kent. According to the 1901 census this school appears to be a school for girls with many from overseas. It was established in 1828 and it still in existence.
Margaret Elizabeth Leman Hare was a teacher at a High School in Leyton, Essex
Constance Sarah Hare was also a teacher at a High School in Leyton, Essex
Mary Adlelaide Hare was, as we all know, a teacher of the deaf at her own school
Ethel Madeline Hare was also a teacher of the deaf and in 1901 was living with her sisters Margaret and Constance in Leyton. Ethel was Headmistress of Hugh Myddleton School for the Deaf. This school was in Islington, London and it was opened about 1892 and closed before the second war.
The first twins were Constance (died in 1942) and Thomas (died in 1935) born in 1864. The second were William and Harold born 1868. Both died in 1943
