The Music Therapy Process
Music Therapy is a profession where music is used within a therapeutic relationship to focus on communicative, emotional, cognitive, physical and social needs of individuals.
Following a consultation, the therapist evaluates the strengths and needs of a client and creates a tailored programme of therapy, with clearly defined objectives. These aims are continually assessed and adjusted in relation to a client's development over a number of sessions.
Sessions may involve improvising and playing music on percussion instruments, singing, moving or listening to music, creating music-based stories and learning a new instrument. Songs and pieces are composed specifically for the sessions. It is not assumed that a client possesses any previous musical experience or skill to play an instrument.
