Kindness matters

Our Year 7 pupils have embraced the Age UK initiative 'Postcards of Kindness' and have been busy writing their letters to elderly residents of care homes.

The initiative, asks people to write and send postcards to the elderly which in turn will spark conversations on topics from around the world.

The pupils wrote about their own feelings of loneliness and the importance of having good friends.  The exercise helped the pupils reflect on the issue of loneliness amongst the older generation as well as their own experiences.

One pupil said, 'I loved doing this project.  I will be really pleased if my postcard makes an older person feel happy and not lonely.  I hope we get a reply back soon.'  The Head of the Year 7 boarding house, has since received some replies back which were shared with the pupils.

Although the residents were unable to thank the pupils in person, it was clear from the letter that they took great pleasure in receiving and reading the postcards.

The initiative has been used in a wider context to make the pupils focus on being kind to others and not just thinking about their own 'worlds'.
