Laura Farris zooms in

As part of Deaf Awareness Week, on Friday 7th May, Laura Farris, MP read an extract via zoom from newly published children’s book, The Quest for the Cockle Implant, to the pupils at Mary Hare Primary School.  The book is written by nine year old Maya who is herself deaf and features a deaf main character.

Maya is due to join Mary Hare Secondary School for Year 7 in September.  Her mum Jessica said, "I hope Maya will be able to join Mary Hare in September 2021 and start her secondary school experience in a positive and welcoming environment that caters to her needs, where she can focus on what she loves: learning!"

Deaf Awareness Week is a national campaign and took place this year between 3rd and 9th May.  The week aims to raise awareness of deafness.

Head Teacher Robert Rattray said, “We were delighted to welcome Laura Farris to our school virtually to read with our children. This was thoroughly enjoyed by all. We were very impressed with this story and our children were inspired by Maya who clearly demonstrated that her young age and deafness are not barriers to writing a published book.”
