Hilary Kay’s obsession with antiques began when she was a child. Hilary joined Sotheby’s at the age of 20 and, the following year, she became Sotheby’s youngest ever auctioneer. Ultimately, as a Senior Director of the company, Hilary was responsible for a wide group of expert departments, as diverse as motor cars, wine and musical instruments.
One of the most familiar faces on the BBC’s long-running Antiques Roadshow series, Hilary joined the programme in 1978. Recently she presented a landmark series for BBC One, Brilliantly British, exploring the lives of Thomas Chippendale, Josiah Wedgwood and William Morris. Hilary has featured in numerous other television and radio programmes and, much to her surprise, she also won BBC’s Celebrity Mastermind.
Hilary is now an independent consultant, broadcaster, lecturer and writer on the subjects of antiques and collectables. Her company Art and Antiques Events, provides arts and antiques-centred entertainments to the corporate market, to the world’s cruise lines and to private clients. She devised and produced a theatre show, “Have You Had It Long, Madam?”, which has toured extensively in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Hilary is currently involved with online further education, having created The Art Institute (www.theartinstitute.co.uk); a course bringing together leading experts and specialist tutors to present the History of Art to an international audience.
