Design Technology

Each year group is split into four rotations covering all Design and Technology areas.

Resistant Materials

Year 7

Safety, 2D/3D sketching, 2D/3D CAD, Design processes, Shaping and forming, Plastics, Timbers, Metal work, Laser cutting, 3D printing, Evaluation

Pupils will make a series of products to reinforce the learning of the topics.  Pupils will make a Clock for a client, using a limited quantity of materials with a theme of their choice, note holder to practice back wood and metal work skills and tool knowledge and a pencil topper to introduce 3D CAD and 3D printing

Year 8

Safety Structures, CAD/CAM, Plastics, Finishing techniques, Designing to limits, Tapping/threading, 3D Printing, Careers, Sustainability, Evaluation

Pupils will make a series of products to reinforce the learning of the topics. Electronic torch – basic electronic components and designing for a client, within limits set by materials and fastenings, a product of their choice using recycled materials and an industry related 3D print project.

Year 9

Biomimicry, Woodwork, Plastics, Electronics, CAD/CAM 2D/3D, Designing for a use/client, Evaluation

The Design and Technology project consists of design analysis, production and evaluation of ideas, the design and make of a lamp in materials/techniques of the pupils choice.

Graphics

Year 7

Variety of rendering techniques, Copying, Design processes, Product analysis, Environmental issues, Research, Logos, Developing and creating for a purpose, Packaging theory and production, Evaluation

Pupils will use software to manipulate their designs into outcomes to advertise and package a product to reinforce the learning of the topics.

Year 8

2/3D design, Sketching, Rendering techniques, Creative thinking, Product analysis

They will work on the theme of Comics developing a Comic Book Character and writing their own story – scaling drawings using the work of Artists as inspiration.

Year 9

Two-point perspective, Orthographic drawing, Isometric drawing, Nets, Advertising and packaging

The Graphics project consists of general principles and the design and manufacture of a piece of packaging that is fit for a purpose.

Food

Year 7

Hygiene, Safety, Recipes, Weighing ingredients, Hot and Cold dishes, Pasta, Sauce, Bread, Baked goods, Evaluation

Tasty Basics - the aim of this unit is to make sure pupils are safe and confident in the kitchen and that they understand hygiene and how to control harmful bacteria. In addition to capability in the kitchen, they are expected to reflect on each dish, analyse the flavours and be able to plan how to make it. Pupils review each recipe and complete activities to help develop safe use of equipment, knowledge and vocabulary.

Year 8

Food safety, Hygiene, Balanced diet, Eatwell Guide, Carbohydrates, Protein, Cooking methods, Evaluation, Health.

Healthy Living – the aim of this unit is for pupils to develop a deeper understanding of food safety and how diet impacts health. Pupils explore healthy eating through the Eatwell Guide and begin to link food choices to conditions such as heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Through practical lessons, they build on their Year 7 skills by making more complex, multi-step dishes and food investigations. Pupils are encouraged to think critically about fast food, comparing it to healthier alternatives, and begin to investigate how cooking methods affect nutritional value. By the end of the unit, pupils design, make and evaluate their own healthy dish, applying their knowledge of nutrition, safety and practical skills independently.

Year 9

Analysis, Supermarket mass produced foods, Ingredient sourcing, Ethics, Climate change

The topic for Year 9 is Food Around the World where pupils move on to main meals that they make independently. We analyse supermarket ready meals to find out where the ingredients come from, to start a conversation about ethics and climate change. Then we make dishes from different continents that develop cookery skills, while looking at food in the news and sustainability.

Textiles

Year 7

Health and safety, Fabric construction techniques, Appliqué and dyeing., Fabric, colour, Texture and Pattern, Using heat on Fabrics, Evaluations

Decoration and construction. In year 7 pupils will cover; Health & Safety in the studio; machinery safety; basic construction techniques; how to change the properties of materials, analysing these methods and making selections.

Year 8

Constructing fabrics, Bonding, Weaving,  Knitting, Felting

Exploring different methods of constructing fabrics. Within this project they will learn properties of fabrics and where they are made. Students will use one or more of these methods learnt to construct a final product.

Year 9

Textile Industry, Fast fashion, Designers and Artists linked to sustainability, Suitability, Reducing waste and reducing impact on the environment, Evaluation

Putting learning into practice and making a final piece using recycled/ repurposed materials.
