Darren joined the board of Trustees in September 2024.  Darren Mernagh holds a BSc in Molecular Biology (1992) and a PhD in Molecular Genetics (1995). After completing doctoral studies, Darren spent five years engaged in molecular research. In 2000, Darren was appointed to a tenured lectureship at the University of Portsmouth. During Darren’s time at Portsmouth, roles included Deputy Head of the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Science, Associate Dean for the Faculty of Science and Health, and, from 2012 to 2022, Head of the School of Biological Sciences.

In 2022, Darren was awarded Fellowship of Advance HE. This is the highest grade of academic excellence within Advance HE and is held by approximately 10% of higher education staff.

In September 2022, Darren became Dean of Higher Education and Vice Principal at University Centre Sparsholt, with responsibility for the leadership and strategic direction of the institution’s higher education provision.
