Mary Hare School

Mary Hare is a special school for deaf children. Because of the low incidence of profound deafness, our students come from all over the UK and further afield, so we have a boarding provision, which is set in beautiful grounds next to Snelsmore Common, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. The school has a team of fully qualified care staff to look after the children in residence. Benefits of working at Mary Hare include small teaching groups, pupils who value help and support and a close and supportive teaching staff.

Mary Hare educates 250 profoundly deaf children and we pride ourselves on our excellent achievements at both GCSE and A Level (pass rate 97% grades A-E). We offer the opportunity to teach highly motivated children, in small classes, where you can make a real difference at this national centre of excellence for deaf education. No knowledge of sign language is required, as we follow an auditory/oral philosophy.

Applications for teaching roles are welcomed from both teachers of the deaf and teachers of hearing children who would be interested in this unique opportunity to teach deaf children. Teachers without a formal qualification to teach deaf children would be required to qualify through in-service training within three years of appointment. SEN point 2 would be awarded on completion of this training. The opportunity to study for a Master’s Degree is available. Funding for these courses will be borne fully by the school.
