On Tuesday, the week kicked off with a host of fun including Henna Art, learning Spanish for holidays and learning how to cook the perfect steak. Lots of these session will be the first time the students have tried their hand at something new, such as Microbits, where they were able to programme and run a small pocket computer, and the clay workshop where they created their own roman oil lamp
“Microbits is interesting. There is a myriad of things you can do with them.”
In the clay workshop, one staff member shared, “We‘ve been learning to do the coil technique and how to make a Roman Oil Lamp. It‘s very interesting.”We welcomed the Berkshire Printmakers and students had the chance to screen print a design on their own t-shirt. Reece Millard, who trained at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance and has his own company called HOZO Dance, taught the students some street dance tips and routines. We also invited Shakespeare‘s Globe Theatre, who ran drama workshops and shared insight into the history of Shakespeare. One student shared their experience about the Globe Theatre workshop:
“I loved learning about the history of Shakespeare, all about the plays and making my acting skills better by reading the language carefully.”
On Wednesday the Secondary students visited the Primary School and both Secondary and Primary pupils enjoyed face painting. The Primary pupils also got to try out some juggling and hula hoops in circus skills. Some students put their heads together to solve Escape Room puzzles, whilst others got to pilot a drone to try out aerial photography. Other activities included a maths treasure hunt, e-sports, forensic science, a wire workshop and a trip to the New Forest water park.On this day we were delighted to welcome back artist Shirley Eccles who shared her extensive expertise in glass art, and students got to create their own glass leaf design
Thursday culminated the week, where we saw another extraordinary day of activities and workshops. We welcomed ex-premiership player Dave Kitson who gave our students a football masterclass, students created festival headbands and fidget accessories and some relaxed with yoga. Other activities included forging, forensic science and stage fighting, as well as the return of popular sessions such henna art and e-sports
After an exhilarating week of fun, we concluded Extravaganza Week with a whole school drone video project. It was a fantastic opportunity for the students and staff to come together and leaves a perfect mark on what has been another fantastic year at Mary Hare School.
