Success for GCSE Results Day

On Thursday 22 August, students at Mary Hare School have been celebrating their results for GCSE results day.

This year‘s results show how our students have continued to demonstrate that deafness is not a barrier to success. Many of the severe and profoundly deaf students that attend the school are celebrating in achieving positive outcomes including a number of those who, prior to joining Mary Hare, were not expected to be on GCSE pathways. This was the case for Shea, who was not set to attain GCSEs in his previous provision, now celebrates after achieving 7:

“I'm relieved to have done well in my exams. It‘s a very nice feeling and I‘m looking forward to going into Sixth Form to continue my studies! Hard work pays off!”

His mum, Angela, also commented on his success: “I am immensely proud of Shea's achievements. What he has achieved in a short time coming from a school that had him on a Functional skills pathway is outstanding! Shea has received amazing support from everyone at Mary Hare and worked hard; this is evidenced in his results, achieving 7 GCSEs at Grade 4 and above. Thank you!”

Michelle achieved 9s in Combined Science and an 8 in Maths and History, and shared,

“I am eternally grateful for everything Mary Hare has done for me and I am pleased with my results.”

Ellie, who achieved a 7 in Media Studies and History, Merit in Sports and a 6 in English Language and Literature, shares her delight in what her results mean for her next steps:

I have now accepted an unconditional offer to stay at Mary Hare and join their Sixth Form to study Media, Photography and Sports, with a view to going to university to study Sports Journalism after. I‘m immensely grateful to all of the brilliant staff at Mary Hare for the support and guidance they have given me, and my results are just as much theirs as they are mine. I would not have received these results without the environment they provided to allow me to achieve my potential.

Students who receive additional specialist support also saw plenty of success, including Adi who shared his thoughts: “I am very happy with my achievements and my family is also very proud of it. I am grateful to the school and all teachers for helping with revisions and practices, it really helped me a lot. Also, I am thankful to my parents for their help with revisions during my exam time. Now I am looking forward to start my Sixth Form studies in Mary Hare.”

Robin Askew, Principal of Mary Hare School, said, “Our pupils have shown great determination to achieve their potential. The many stories of individual success are testament to having suitable provision to meet their educational needs. The outcomes achieved are possible thanks to the holistic support provided by Teachers of the Deaf, Speech and Language Therapists, Specialist Teaching Assistants and many other professionals, but most importantly the pupils own desire to succeed.”

It has been another successful year for our students at Mary Hare School as they now pursue their next steps, and we look forward to welcoming back many in September as they commence their Sixth Form studies.
